American Idol - Current Count, 2 Davids and 2 Cooks

I was hoping today to be able to report we’d lost one of our Cooks in season 7 of American Idol, and just any Cook wouldn’t have been okay. I much preferred for it to be Kristy Lee and not David. Instead, we lost a David, but not David Cook. We lost David Hernandez, although many were worried about David Archuleta after his woeful performance. Confused?

Here’s how it all went down, noteworthy, because we have a few changes to how the results shows are usually run for final 12, and no one is quite sure what to make of them. We had the Ford commercial, which was actually pretty good, but I wish they would have showed the individual performers for longer. Jason Castro had his hair pulled back, and it would have answered it for us one way or another what he’d look like without dreads. Yet, we never got to see him long enough.

We also had the group performance, which I may be in a minority here, but I always like those. I like these medleys, and I like hearing everyone sing together, in pairs, groups, etc. And it’s so much better than the first year when they had no harmonizing … at all, just everyone singing the same, making it really easy to hear who was off, and really easy for Kelly Clarkson to just take off on her riffs and blow everyone else away. And, is it just me, or are there some people that we never get to hear from individually on these, so we know it’s not their last night, as we know they’re not going out like that?

There was also lots of pimping for Horton Hears a Who. I’ll be seeing it this week, reviewing it for both Film Monthly and Viewpoints, and I’m just excited to see Jim Carey and Steve Carrell, even if it’s just their voices. And Horton was always one of my favorite Dr. Suess books. My 11-year-old daughter wants to see it as well, but is embarrassed as she thinks the theatre will be filled with “little kids,” seeing it as a “baby movie.” Conversely, the 14-year-old son can’t wait to see it, mostly because of Carey and Carrell.

Yet, the neatest thing for me of the all the Horton Hoopla was seeing Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon at the screening of the film. What the heck was he doing there? I checked IMDB and he doesn’t have any acting or musical credits in the film, so he must’ve just been there to see the film. I wasn’t the only one impressed, as Amanda Overmyer seemed thrilled to see him as well. I have to admit it had me thinking an REO Speedwagon theme on Idol would be amazing. Some might not do them enough justice and would have me squirming, but I’m betting Amanda, David C., Michael, and Carly would do Kevin proud. And this week, I’m thinking even Chikezie could pull it off! Ramiele and Syesha would be doing Can’t Fight This Feeling or Keep On Loving You, but the others would rock out on Ridin’ the Storm Out and Back on the Road Again. Good times.

Back to the results, as I think that’s why we’re here, not for movie previews and old rock bands come to life again. But first, there are some questions via call-ins to the show … live. Okay, I could do without this. I just have to go on record as saying that. Jason answered one, along with the judges. It was just … lame. We want the damn results already.

The group of 12 were asked to stand up in groups of 4 with one person from each in the bottom three. Ryan played with Chikezie a little, like he did with Sanjaya last year, making him think he was in the bottom, then letting him sit down. Kristy Lee Cook knew she was in the bottom, and just told Ryan to hand her the microphone already. And it wasn’t until she was standing next to David Cook that I realized there were two Cooks in the competition. Surely tonight we were paring that total down.

Sure enough, it was Kristy Lee in the bottom three, and not David. Yet, surprisingly, another David was in the bottom three. David Hernandez. He’s been stellar through the rest of the competition, but was actually in the cellar this week. I think without the discovered past of his he would have stayed, but with some wanting him out because of that, along with no one voting for him because of his crappy rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, which didn’t have nearly the difficulty as his voice needs, it did him in.

Syesha Mercado rounded out the bottom three. It worked a little differently tonight, as instead of hearing the voted out person sing their song, we heard all three of them do that, however, that has been done before occasionally in other seasons, just not regularly every week. It meets with some mixed results, as some consider it less cruel than asking them to sing after they were voted out, and others consider it a waste of time, as they’re in the bottom three because we didn’t want to listen to them the first time around, why force us to listen again?

It was Syesha that was sent back to the couch first, and at that point, I thought surely we were losing a Cook. Instead, surprisingly, we lost a David. Ryan loosely went around the subject of David’s past, saying he knows he had a tough few weeks, etc., and you just have to look at it this way.  David has a great voice and is a great talent, but as soon as he had one bad week. Bang. He’s done. Unlike the other David that is not a Cook, Archuleta, who had an even worse performance, but stayed, because he’s a cute, innocent 17 year old kid. He can screw up a few more times, before he needs to really get it together if he hopes to be there for final 2. David Hernandez only had one screw up to make, and sadly for him, it came this week, meaning he doesn’t make final 10 or the tour.

I think we’ll go another two or three weeks before we lose another guy. There are too many girls that have talent, but don’t do much to separate themselves from the pack, and by that I mean Kristy, Syesha, and Ramiele Mulabay. Sadly at least two of those three will now make the final 10. Next week isn’t going to help them a whole lot. I’ll admit, I enjoyed Beetles week, but why do we need another? I think two weeks in a row of the same music is a bit overkill. Save it for next season!
