American Idol - Open Letter to Michael Johns

Right now my face looks like Paula Abdul’s, with my chin literally on the ground. I was hoping you’d make it to final three, but I wasn’t too sure. Regardless, I never would have thought you’d go this early. I thought for sure you’d be here until at least final five or six. This has me absolutely blindsided.

And the bummer of it all is you were coming off your two best weeks, and last week was just incredible, showing us what we’ve been begging for all season. That bluesy feeling with lots of soul, like you walked right out of the movie The Commitments. I like you on the Queen, Beatles, and Aerosmith stuff, but when you do the bluesy soul stuff, you blow me away.

Maybe that’s what killed you this week. You built all of us up. We were so thrilled to finally hear what we’d been waiting to hear from you all season. Had you found a bluesy song that had the inspirational feel to it for this week, you would have taken our breath away. Dream On is great in lyrics, but it doesn’t have the emotional pull we wanted to see from you.

Regardless, you were still much better than many of the other Idols this week, so how it is you’re the one that’s leaving is a puzzlement. In a week that David Cook sang a song that no one knew, Brooke sang predictably boring, Syesha sang predictably over her head, and Carly struggled still with her song choices, you were among the best of the night. So there’s no reason for you to be leaving, other than the fact that everyone must have thought you were so safe, that they were voting for others that they thought were in danger.

There are people all over tonight saying it’s so unfair. I don’t think there is anyone that wanted you out this week. I hear a lot of the fans talk about who they want out, and this week it was everyone from Carly, Brooke, Syesha, Kristy, and Jason. But no one said Michael Johns. Apparently people weren’t voting for you, but you also weren’t the person they wanted out, just in case that helps you sleep a little better tonight.

I’m not worried at all about your future, but I’m sure you are after your other attempts at releasing music didn’t go so well. Fear not, though, as you have a whole legion of fans now waiting to see what you’re going to do. Out of the top 12, there are only four that I would possibly buy their CDs, and you are one of them. Just do us a favor and include a few bluesy numbers with soul.

Michael Johns should not have been eliminated this week. As far as I am concerned, it was fixed. How can DialIdol be wrong when almost all their predictions are on the money. Michael was not even close to the bottom three at all. Everyone that made the bottom 2 on DialIdol share the doomed bottom 3 seats on AI and the one at the bottom will be eliminated. I don’t buy that he got the lowest number of votes. There’s always someone there on AI who has the last say; and definitely it’s not the voters. Hopefully, Michael Johns will be another Daughtry and make it big. He surely has what it takes to make it big in the music world.

Shocked, but not terribly. (As you said, Carly’s, Kristy’s, Brooke’s, David C’s, and Syesha’s fans knew they had to step up the vote-dialing to keep their fave safe; Michael’s probably didn’t. Plus, he went first, so some people probably tuned in late and missed his performance.)
    Disappointed? Very!
Michael hasn’t always thrilled me with his imitative covers but his voice comes over very well in recordings. He’s not that exciting on stage so far but he is drop-dead gorgeous and I like his unassuming personality.
Compared to the very non-distinctive (and often OTT) Syesha, the great-voiced but charisma-less Carly, and the uber-mediocre Kristy Lee Cook, Michael Johns is superstar calibre. American Idol Season 7 has just lost one of my 2 or 3 reasons (only one of which is named David) for continuing to watch.

This morning I am still in shock that Michael Johns is gone. He was on my top 4 list and I figured it would be about that time he would go. Carly (something about her I just dislike) and Jason ( he reminds me of Howdy Doody ) should have gone before him. BUT this is how it is….
